To ensure your implant works effectively and to support proper healing, please follow the care guidelines carefully. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
1. Time to Work
If the implant is put in within 5 days of your normal period starting, it will work straightaway.
If it is put in at any other time in your cycle, then it won’t work until 7 days later.
2. Care Advice
Please avoid getting the implant wet for 48 hours — no baths, swimming, or hot tubs!
The big bandage needs to stay on for 24 hours, but the steristrips need to stay on for 48 hours to allow the skin to heal so the implant doesn’t come out.
3. Medications That May Affect Your Implant
Some specialist medications will stop your implant working while you take them and for a month after. These include:
Epilepsy and pain medications: phenytoin, topiramate, carbamazepine
Some HIV medications
An antibiotic called Rifampicin
Modafanil
Griseofulvin
The herbal mood medication St John’s wort will also stop the implant working.
Please discuss any concerns with a doctor.
4. Bleeding Problems
50% of irregular bleeding or spotting will settle in the first 3 months.
If bleeding continues past 3 months, please discuss any bleeding problems with a doctor — we can help with this.
If your bleeding is very frequent, heavy, painful, or concerning even before 3 months, please also discuss it with a doctor (Contact us about your request – Accurx Patient Portal)
